Newfoundland and Labrador’s involvement in the Oil & Gas industry is often portrayed in terms of its grand scale: brokering billion dollar deals, investing in offshore mega-projects, producing millions of barrels of oil, etc. However, what might come as a surprise is that many of these projects hinge on samples of oil no more than a few millimetres in size.
As Michael Hanrahan, owner and founder of Petroforma Reservoir Testing Services, holds up a small vial of crude oil that resembles blackstrap molasses, he explains to AXIS’s ESLT students the various tests performed by the chemists and petroleum technologists in Petroforma’s laboratory, and how the results of each test impacts offshore oil production.
Founded in 2008, Petroforma has quickly built a reputation for quality, precision, and accuracy in the field of chemical analysis. Located in an unassuming building on Southside Road, just a stone’s throw from Fort Amherst and within view of Signal Hill, Petroforma is the only commercial lab of its type east of Alberta. They provide Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) testing services to the ever-growing offshore oil and gas industry which, in the simplest terms, allows oil companies to plan the safest and most efficient way to extract crude from the ground.
Part of Petroforma’s success lay in their understanding of Newfoundland and Labrador’s role in the global economy. They have partnered with several notable national and international businesses, and continue to play a role in the development of new oil fields.
That same global vision is reflected in Petroforma’s workforce: a diverse team of skilled oil and gas professionals with decades of combined experience locally and around the world. Michael has been an active supporter of increased diversity in the province. In addition to opening his facility’s doors to our ESLT class, he has given presentations to our clients, and hosted three successful internships through AXIS’ Internship Placement Program – all of which led to full-time careers for our clients.
AXIS is proud to have played a small part in the development of Petroforma’s team, and we would like to thank Michael and everyone at Petroforma for their continued support!
